Theodoros Kolokotronis (1770-1843) was born at Ramovouni, Messinia. He was named after Theodore Orlov, a Russian army officer. From early on his life was full of adventures: as an armatolos, a pirate, an officer of the English army, a member of the Filiki Etairia. During the Greek Revolution he became a leading figure and a commander in chief. He was the person who achieved the triumphs of the Greeks at Valtetsi, Tripolitsa, Dervenakia. Unfortunately, though he was time and again reviled, imprisoned and persecuted by his political enemies. The people referred to him as the ‘Geros tou Moria’.
