Georgios Karaiskakis ((1782-1827) was most likely born at Mavrommati, Karditsa. Initially he was a kleftis, later on an armatolos, then a merchant at the court of Ali Pasha, and finally a great leading figure of the Greek Revolution. He suffered the rage of the ‘politicians’, especially of Alexandros Mavrokordatos, who took away from him all his privileges and honours. However, he was restored by the ‘military’ and swiftly he liberated almost the entire Sterea Hellas fighting against the forces of Kioutachi. He fell heroically at Faliron and died on the feast day of St George.
