Andreas Vokos or ‘Miaoulis’ (1769-1835) was born in Hydra and during the Revolution he became the chief of the Greek navy. He belonged to a socially prominent family and had acquired great wealth. While at the beginning he was very cautious as to the revolt of the Greeks, quickly he offered substantial finances, as well as his entire fleet, to the struggle of the nation. His participation in providing Mesolongi with food and weapons was vital. He died in Piraeus, where he was also buried; hence the location ‘Akti Miaoulis’.
